RHINELANDER - Kindergarteners in Rhinelander are getting a lesson in oral health this week.
Today volunteers from Ministry Health Care were at Crescent School teaching the students about the importance of oral hygiene and choosing healthy snacks.
Each student got an oral health tool kit with a toothbrush, toothpaste, dental floss and learning activity sheets.
One of the volunteers says having healthy teeth is directly related to overall health, so it's important to get the message across to kids at a young age.
"If you have cavities and lots of decayed teeth in your mouth you could end up having other physical problems. They've proven over the years that older people as they age if they have gum disease or cavities it interferes with general health and can cause heart problems," says Karen Knoell, a volunteer from Ministry Healthcare.
The volunteers also say that while kids are at a young age, parents may need to help them with brushing and flossing their teeth to make sure it's done thoroughly.
The last presentation is tomorrow at Northwoods Community Elementary Charter School.
