New Community Center? Submitted: 10/20/2009
BOULDER JUNCTION - Here are the results from Tuesday evening's Special Town Meeting of the electors.

To consider the adoption of a resolution by the town meeting authorizing the town board to construct a proposed community center/library/town hall pursuant to s. 60.10(2)(f), Wis. Stat. at a cost not to exceed $3.5 million dollars, which my subsequently increase the Town's tax levy.

Yes 75

Tuesday's meeting of the electors was for qualified electors only.

This means residents must live in the Town of Boulder Junction for 10 days and bring photo ID and proof of residency.

Voters and non-voters filled the current community center to standing room only capacity.

The question at hand is to adopt a resolution to build a $3.5 million community center, library, and town hall, which could increase the Town's tax levy.

According to information handed out by the Town, the tax increase would be $46 per $100,000 of assessed value for a time period of 20 years.

The Town Board and committees have worked on this project for almost two years.

After looking at three options the Town decided a brand new building would be the most cost effective.

With that, qualified electorate voters have mixed reactions.

Sharon Iltis has lived in Boulder Junction for 20 years. She says, "We need to pull together as a community, and support the Town and as well as our children and people who use the community building--there's a lot of good things that can come out of this and we need to be supportive and have open minds."

Ken Ehle also lives in Boulder Junction but he tells Newswatch 12, he's not completely for the project, "Our library does need additional help, it's too small, it does get used, my family benefits from it. i think that could have been addressed differently for something signficantly less than $3.5 million when you look at what Minocqua's going to do for $1.6 million"

Ehle says his main concern is the increased taxes.

He says they passed an operating referendum this spring and North Lakeland Elementary School may need a referendum as well.
