MANITOWISH WATERS - After about 6 months of growing these cranberries in cooler temperatures than previous years, crews are now harvesting the last couple beds of them.
Bob Winter, General Manager, Vilas Cranberry Company, says "We had a cool growing season, but it turned out to be a fairly descent crop this year and we're happy that we're coming down the home stretch."
Bob Winter has worked in the cranberry industry for about 30 years. He says when it comes to growing cranberries it all boils down to the right kind of weather.
Winter says "Weather is the big thing. I mean we had an exceptionally cool July and that certainly doesn't help matters, but we were able to have a very nice September."
The Vilas Cranberry Company here in Manitowish Waters has been growing cranberries since 1946. These cranberries have about 182 acres to grow on.
While these cranberries provide a delicious treat for families all across the country, they also have a huge impact on Wisconsin's economy.
Winter says "There's approximately about 18,000 acres of cranberries in Wisconsin right now. And we are the nation's leading producer and this is the 15th year in a row that we've accomplished that, so we're all proud of that."
15 years as the number one state to produce cranberries and Bob Winter says he hopes will continue for many years to come.
