Local Soldier on Cover of TIME Submitted: 10/03/2009
SUGAR CAMP - Phyllis and Ronald Millard are showing their granddaughter her Uncle Chet's picture on this week's cover of TIME Magazine.

"I'm in shock, I mean, Presidents are on TIME, Movie Stars are on TIME, and now our son is on there," says Phyllis.

"The photo brings home what a lot of families are going through," says Ronald

The Millards' son, Sergeant First Class Chet Millard, is shown on the cover of TIME right after he was injured while on duty in Afghanistan. The photo is part of an article that takes an up close look at the war.

"I'm very proud. He's still my baby, but he's grown up to be quite a man," says Phyllis.

The Millards say they're very proud of Chet, but this moment is bittersweet for them. 32-year-old Sergeant Millard serves in the 951st Sapper Company. He served alongside Sergeant Ryan Adams who was killed in action in Afghanistan Friday.

"Sergeant Adams family. I just, I can't claim to know what they're going through, but it comes close," says Phyllis.

"I can't begin to feel what they're feeling and my heart goes out to them, so does my wife and our whole family," says Ronald.

Ronald and Phyllis say their son wasn't injured in the firefight that took Sergeant Adams' life and injured seven others, because he is still recovering from injuries he received on September 8th to his head, back and knee. Phyllis says she's proud of her son, but she can't wait to have him home safe in Sugar Camp.

"I'm looking at it from a mother's viewpoint and I'd rather they were home. And I think I speak for all mothers," says Phyllis.

She and Ronald say they're looking forward to November, when the soldiers from the 951st are scheduled to come home to the Northwoods.

"He's a good soldier, great son, good father and he'll be coming home," says Ronald.

Ronald says he worries his son will have to do another tour after this one, but for now, he and Phyllis are sending their love to Afghanistan and waiting until they can see Chet again in person, not just on the cover of a magazine.
