RHINELANDER - Wisconsin's cigarette tax will go up 75 cents per pack tomorrow.
At Holiday Gas Station in Rhinelander the manager says cigarette sales are up 10-percent over last week--because some smokers are stocking up on cigarettes at a lower price.
Employees at Holiday say with the tax increase almost all cigarettes they sell will now be over five dollars a pack.
Some smokers I spoke with today didn't want to comment on camera but say the extra tax just isn't right.
Others did and had this to say.
John Harrin says, "I think it's ludicrous, personally, I understand that they're trying to convince people that it's for a good cause to help promote non-smoking, which is a good thing, but a multi-billion dollar industry to tell the American public to try and tell the public that we're going to lose our business by raising prices, doesn't make sense."
Cher Laakso adds, "I feel like I am being punished for smoking and I don't think that's right at all."
Holiday employees say the tax will take effect in their computer system at midnight tonight.
At that time employees say they'll have to inventory all their cigarettes and report those numbers to the state.
I did speak with a few non-smokers about what they think of the increase--many said they didn't really care because the tax doesn't impact them.
One former smoker says the tax is a good thing--because she's living with two smoking-related illnesses and says she's living proof of what cigarettes can do to you.
