LAKE WINNEBAGO - A top fish biologist says ice and water conditions on Lake Winnebago look ideal for the sturgeon spearing season.
Ron Bruch of the state Department of Natural Resources says spearers should be able to see some really big fish during the season that opens Feb. 14.
Bruch says recent fish surveys indicate some lucky spearer could make history by getting the biggest fish ever.
The record sturgeon speared was a 188-pounder taken in 2004.
Bruch says surveys estimate about 60,000 sturgeon are in the fishery, some up to 80 years old, and DNR crews netted one that was more than 80 inches long and weighed nearly 230 pounds.
The spearing season runs through March 1 or until the harvest limit is reached.
