MADISON - Governor Doyle's message tonight was clear. As far as Wisconsin is concerned maintain what we already have.
And in terms of the national economy and rising unemployment, Wisconsinites need to be innovative and do more with what we have.
Regarding unemployment Doyle acknowledged four Janesville GM assembly plant workers who have lost their job because of the economic recession.
Doyle stressed the need to rebuild Wisconsin businesses and in order to do that, he said creativity is needed.
He also focused on the state's $5.4 billion budget deficit, saying Republicans and Democrats need to work together.
He said, "what isn't needed will be cut."
Doyle says his priorities are good schools, affordable and available health care and police and fire protection.
He says achieving these things will be tough.
Doyle says, "Staying even is the new increase, and for everyone who's looking for the state budget and wondering what will happen, please remember, that's my mantra. Staying even is the new increase."
Doyle says the economic stimulus package will help balance the state's budget--but we should not rely on that to fix our problems.
And that Wisconsin could see at least $2 billion from the federal government.
Governor Doyle rcecognized several people during his 45 minute speech Wednesday.
And one of them is from right here in Northern Wisconsin.
Joe Van Groll, is a Stratford cheesemaker and turned his leftover ingredients into fuel for cars.
Governor Doyle says, "[He used] whey permeate, and found a way to turn it into a renewable fuel. He then set-up a local distribution network for his cheese based ethanol."
Doyle says Wisconsin is not the only state facing deficits right now, in fact 45 other states are also facing budget shortfalls.
Doyle will present his state budget to the legislature in February.
