RHINELANDER - Food safety is an important part of Thanksgiving.
Here are some helpful tips to keep your holiday dinner healthy.
Todd Troskey from the Oneida County Public Health Department says when you're preparing and storing your food there are a few food safety tips to keep in mind.
First, keep things clean in the kitchen.
Don't mix raw and ready to eat products.
Second, cook all foods to 165 degrees.
That ensures all food, raw or ready to eat, is thoroughly cooked.
Third, when food is cooling keep portions small and don't put lids on leftovers until the food is completely cooled in the refrigerator.
Finally, separate your raw meats and produce in the refrigerator.
Always store you meat on the bottom shelf. That way if it leaks it won't contaminate your fruits and vegetables.
Troskey says keeping these tips in mind is important so you don't get sick.
He tells Newswatch 12, "Salmonella with turkeys is the main concern, not only with the turkeys themselves but any egg products that you're using can have salmonella already inside the egg which is why it's really important to cook eggs to 165 degrees as well."
Troskey says each year during the holiday season the Health Department sees a handful of food poisoning cases.
