LAC DU FLAMBEAU - An injunction filed by Lac Du Flambeau tribal members has been denied.
Over the weekend, The Lac du Flambeau tribal council says they removed nominated candidates for their upcoming election for reasons already in the Tribe's Constitution.
Tribal members say they were upset with the move and so they filed an injunction against the Tribal Council's actions.
According to tribal court, the injunction addresses two issues-
First, petitioners say the resolution including the amendments is unconstitutional.
Second, the resolution caused nominees to be removed from the primary ballot.
Tribal Council says they have presented evidence to show that the petitioners were not excluded from the primary ballot because of the amendment but because of reasons already in place.
Victoria Doud, the Tribal President, says, "Well, I can't speak for the whole council, but I'm pleased, relieved, this is holding- the public officials are representing our people to hire standards and I think it's a good thing for the tribe all around."
Tribal members say they're upset the injunction was denied because they say there are some major changes within the tribe which need to take place.
Betty Jack was removed from the ballot, says, "I think the injunction- it's not just about Betty Jack or the ones taken off the ballot- It's about our whole community and the harm that it's doing to our descendents and the people and it need not be that way."
William Beson, a former council member and running again in the upcoming election says, "It comes as no surprise to me. I knew it would happen. The whole court system is a tool of the current administration. The court system is a shame."
Beson says there are other issues with the current council which he would like to address if elected into office.
Tribal President, Victoria Doud says she wants to see her members move on from this election issue.
The election is this upcoming Tuesday, September 2nd.
