RHINELANDER - Some rental car facilities in the Northwoods are saying so long to SUVs and vans, a move they say needs to be done to satisfy customers.
Car rental companies like Alamo and Avis are finding it increasingly difficult to rent gas-hogging SUVs and vans on a regular basis.
Companies like Alamo say the majority of its fleet consists of more fuel-efficient vehicles like the Impala and Aveo.
Jami Kurth, manager for Rhinelander Alamo and National City, says her business only offers 2 SUV's.
Kurth says since customers are the ones responsible for filling the tank, they opt for cars, but sometimes the lonely SUV is all they have to offer.
Kurth says, "If they're not reserved, it's very hard to give them as a free upgrade to someone. Even though they're getting a better vehicle, they just don't want to pay for the extra gas, so they sit a lot."
Not all companies like this Alamo are stuck with the SUV's.
Kurth says her company has what you call turnback vehicles, once they are done with the cars, they can return them to GM.
