- Wisconsin Senator Herb Kohl is urging the Agriculture Department to install cameras in slaughterhouses to ensure meat safety.
The action follows the release of video shot by the Humane Society ofthe United States and prompted the largest beef recall in U.S. history.
Hidden camera video shows workers at a California meat plant shoving and kicking sick, crippled cattle.
In response, the Agriculture Department shut down the plant and ordered the recall of 143 million pounds of the company's beef.
The Chair of a Senate Appropriations subcommittee on Agriculture is also calling for every meat plant that supplies products for USDA nutrition programs within 30 days.
