Wounded veterans trade wheelchairs for kayaksSubmitted: 07/21/2014
Story By Associated Press

WAUSAU - Wounded veterans traded their wheelchairs for specially outfitted kayaks this weekend in Wausau.

About a dozen veterans participated in the outing at Wausau Whitewater Park on Saturday.

It was organized by Team River Runner.

The nonprofit group was founded 10 years ago in Washington, D.C.

Now it has chapters across the country.

Ken Braband helps run the group's Milwaukee chapter.

He says a veteran who can't walk or who needs a walker can get a real thrill out of riding on rushing water.

Army veteran Terrence Green of Bay View suffered a neck injury two years ago that robbed him of most of the feeling below his waist.

He says kayaking has helped him exercise and lose weight.
