Story By NBC

WAUKESHA - The two 12-year-old girls accused of stabbing a friend 19 times appeared in court Wednesday.

Authorities say the two girls tried to kill their 12-year-old friend to appease a fictional internet character called "Slender Man."

Both girls are charged as adults with attempted murder.

Anthony Cotton, the attorney for one of the girls submitted a doctor's report stating the girl is not mentally competent to proceed.

The judge approved the state's request for their own examination of the girl and set a new hearing date.

The attorney for the other defendant asked for another hearing in 30 days to determine when a preliminary hearing should be held.

Both hearings will be held on August first.
