Nicolet Technical College installing cutting edge classroomsSubmitted: 03/18/2014
Story By Dan McKinney

RHINELANDER - Nicolet students will soon be able to interact with people from all over the world. Nicolet Technical College plans to install 4 telepresence conference rooms this fall. These rooms will be used to video chat with guest speakers and professors from around the world.

"Participants will face a series of large 65 inch screens which present a panoramic view of the conference to which they are connected," says Nicolet Technical College Dean of Business Dean Chuck Komp. "So it gives the illusion of being in a conference setting in which one has a circular table with all of the participants sitting in that circle."

Money used from a department of labor grant will help fund the project. Nicolet hopes the new rooms enhance the learning experience on campus.

"The video conference rooms that we'll be putting on campus are going to be a great learning experience for our students," says Komp. "The current environment that we have provides a very good base for instruction but the new telepresence systems will make students feel as if they're in the same room as their participants are maybe 10 or 100 miles away."

The college hopes students can start using the telepresence rooms in the spring 2015 semester.
