Woman jailed, accused of leading police on chase while drunk Submitted: 03/17/2014

MERRILL - A Merrill woman sits in jail, accused of running from the police drunk, with a teenager in the car.

A Lincoln County Sheriffs deputy was cruising down Joe Snow Road, south of Merrill, when a car went blasting by at 86 miles an hour.

When the deputy turned to stop the car, it sped up to over 100 miles an hour, and almost went off the road twice.

The chase stopped when the driver suddenly pulled into a driveway.

The 41 year old woman who had been driving got out quickly.

The deputy drew his tazer to hold her until help arrived.

The front seat passenger, a 41 year old Merrill man, was also arrested for violating his probation by drinking.

A second passenger was just 13 years old.

The driver was booked into jail for recklessly endangering safety, and fleeing an officer, as well as driving drunk with a passenger under 16.

RHINELANDER - When high school senior Valarie Puza got her invitation to Rhinelander's scholarship award ceremony, she knew she had gotten some money to help pay for college.

She had no idea she would be going home with more than $30,000 in scholarship money.

$227,425 was awarded to 84 seniors at the annual ceremony.

Puza won seven scholarships, including the Gaffney Trust Future Teacher's scholarship worth $25,000.

"At first it didn't really hit me," said Puza. "But then I just thought about it, and I thought wow, that's a couple years of college paid for. And it's a good opportunity that I got any money, let alone the amount that I did."
