Several area wrestlers in semifinals after day one at state Submitted: 02/27/2014

MADISON - Several wrestlers from the Northwoods headed to Madison with championship dreams. The Merrill Bluejays led the way with seven wrestlers competing at state.

At Division One 195 pounds, Rhinelander's Connor Johnson won is preliminary match against Green Bay Preble/East. However, he lost his quarterfinal match Thursday night.

At D-1 170 pounds, Merrill's David Pophal won both his matches. He'll wrestle in the semifinals Friday night.


D-1 126 pounds, Wausau West's Hunter Kuehl began with a pin fall victory against Burlington in the opening round. But he fell in the quarterfinals.

Other results include, Defending D-1 state champ Tyler Schmidt of Merrill is in the semifinals at 220.

In Division 3, Crandon's Morgan Krueger fell in the preliminaries at 132 pounds. However Grant Murray of Crandon reached the 285 quarterfinals.

Statford's Sam Wenzel earned a sudden victory decision at 106 pounds.

George Wolfe of Phillips lost in D-3 138 pound prelims.
