Story By Marisa Silvas

THE NORTHWOODS - High school state tournaments began last weekend with swimming. Many other athletes are hoping to make it to the big stage.

Time for a look at our latest nominees for Newswatch 12 Player of the Week.

Trips to state were on the line in wrestling over the weekend. Rhinelander's Connor Johnson won his first place match against Merrill's Alex Klug. Johnson won by decision, 3-1 to earn his spot in Madison. He competes in the 195 weight class and is 38-2 for the season.

Next, Conference championships were held in gymnastics. In the GNC small division, Lakeland's Haley Farrell had a solid performance. Haley took 3rd in the floor exercise, 4th in bars and 3rd in vault. She finished 6th in the all around.

In boys basketball, Chequamegon senior Malachi Bush had a night to remember Friday versus Newman Catholic. Malachi put up 43 points including seven 3 pointers in the Screaming Eagles win over Newman.

On the ice, Northland Pines began their playoff run against Rhinelander last Thursday and #16 Nick Dean came up big for the Eagles. Dean had a hat trick and also added an assist to help Pines advance with a 4-0 victory.

To vote on any of our nominees go to the sports poll at wjfw.com. Voting ends at 3pm on Friday. The winner will receive a plaque courtesy of R & D Trophies of Tomahawk.

MINOCQUA - Getting a license to become a fishing guide in Wisconsin doesn't take much effort. Applicants fill out a one-page form and send a check to the DNR.

One local guide thinks the process should include steps to ensure safety on the water. Minocqua-area fishing guide Greg Bohn wants guides to be trained in safety procedures.

"You pay a $40 fee for the license, and you're a Wisconsin Licensed Fishing Guide. It doesn't mean that you're protecting yourself. It doesn't mean that you're protecting your passengers for hire," Bohn said.

"It's been going really good, it's a first time event," Decker said. "You know we're very used to running a lot of snowmobile events, so this is very different. There's always some hiccups when you first start out. But things are going good. People are starting to come in. There's a lot of vendors here. I think it's going to be a great weekend."
