Area wrestlers earn trips to stateSubmitted: 02/22/2014

WAUSAU - Trips to state were on the line for individual wrestlers on Saturday.

The D-1 sectional at Wausau West High School.

At 195 pounds, Rhinelander's Connor Johnson edged Alex Klug of Merrill in the first place match 3-1. Johnson is making his second straight trip to Madison with the victory.

Merrill's David Pophal captured the 170 pound title. He defeated Josh Waddell of Menomonie in sudden victory, 8-6. Pophal is making his third appearance. He's one of seven Bluejays state-bound.


Other results include Fritz Schierl of SPASH earning his first trip at 138 pounds, and Travis Hettinga of Wausau West taking the 160 pound title.

At the D-2 sectional in Seymour, Braxton Potrykus of Wittenberg-Birnamwood won at 152 pounds.

The Division 3 sectional in Bonduel, section champs include Dylan Altmann of Auburndale at 106 pounds. Devin Lemanski of Edgar at 145.

Morgan Krueger and Grant Murray of Crandon finished second in their weight classes. They're among several Northwoods wrestlers also headed to Madison.
