Northland Pines students take care of gardenSubmitted: 02/19/2014
Story By Kaitlyn Howe

EAGLE RIVER - 70 degrees and sunny might seem far from here.

But students at Northland Pines get to enjoy that every day at their garden.

The garden is located inside Northland Pine's Greenhouse.

They're gardening for a class.

The class lets students learn more about growing their own food.

"I love to garden and we had this beautiful facility here at Northland Pines. The greenhouse that was added when we built our building, the science department was able to put on a green house. And it wasn't being utilized as well as it could be. So I wrote a class request and it was approved by the board so we started.," says Robin Indermuehle, Life Science Teacher at Northland Pines.

Food grown in class goes to a local food pantry.

But gardening isn't the only thing they learn about.

"One of the things that I really love about the class is that it's project based. So the students are really picking the projects that they're interested in. There's some people that looked at getting in to invasive species we talked a little bit about that and so one of my students got in contact with our invasive species coordinator. And another was, looked into getting beehives after we had the Oneida County beekeepers come in," says Indermuehle.

This is the third year of the program.
