Newswatch 12 POW nominees Feb 10Submitted: 02/10/2014

- The Olympics is not the only place to find top-notch performances. Several high
school athletes are also putting in some memorable games.

Here are the nominees for the Newswatch 12 Player of the Week.

NOMINEE 1

Rhinelander senior David Pokrandt had the chance to go from manager to varisty
basktball player for one night. Dave played the final minute against Tomahawk
and hit the three pointer. A great moment for the young man batteling cognitive
disability and A-D-H-D.


NOMINEE 2

Antigo boys' hockey team earned a huge road victory against Northland Pines.
Matt Wolter had a hat-trick - or scored three goals against the Eagles.

NOMINEE 3

In nordic skiing, Lakeland's Erin Bolger was the state champion in the pursuit
race. She was more than one minute faster than all of the other competitors in
Cable this weekend.

NOMINEE 4

Chequamegon boys' basketball star Shane Wakefield scored a game-high 36 points
against Rib Lake. He also had 9 steals, 8 rebounds, and 3 assists in the victory.

To vote on any of the nominees, go to the sports poll at wjfw.com. Voting ends
at 3pm on Friday. The winner earns a plaque for the achievement.

Dan Baratka of the Phillips boys' basketball team was last week's winner.

DNR reminds hunters to check boundaries Submitted: 10/30/2014

WISCONSIN - Wisconsin wildlife leaders want to remind deer hunters to learn the boundaries of new management units by reviewing county lines.

The DNR reduced the number of traditional management units this year from 134 to 72 units based on county boundaries in an effort to simplify the hunt.

The agency says hunters need to have a good idea where county lines are so they know where units begin and end.

The new units don't follow roads or rivers like they did in the past.

MINOCQUA - A Rhinelander sex offender could go back to prison.

Albert Chagnon allegedly made a booklet filled with photos of young Northwoods girls while he was still in prison in Oshkosh.

The Oneida County Sheriff's Office had a community meeting Wednesday. Parents at the meeting were given details about the booklet.

WAUSAU - Candidates for the 7th Congressional District debated over topics like mining, jobs, Ebola, healthcare, and other issues in Wausau Wednesday night.

Rep. Sean Duffy (R-Wisconsin) and Kelly Westlund (D-Ashland) are running for the 7th Congressional District seat. The district covers part of 20 counties across northern Wisconsin.

The area lags behind the rest of the state economically. That was one of the reasons mining was a topic of focus. The Gogebic Taconite project would involve a four mile open pit mine in Iron and Ashland County. The project could mean more than 600 jobs with other secondary jobs connected to the mine.

Professional cartoonist paints Hodag mural Submitted: 10/29/2014

RHINELANDER - Rhinelander's beloved Hodag will come to life thanks to a local cartoonist this week.

Thomas Barnett is painting the mural inside the Northwoods Community Elementary School.

"Mr. Losch, the principal, showed me this penciled Hodag that they had on the wall for years that no one ever did anything with. He had heard that I was an artist and asked if I'd be interested in coming in one of these days and doing something on the wall," said cartoonist Thomas Barnett.

Man hurt in Wausau stabbingSubmitted: 10/29/2014

WAUSAU - A stabbing in Wausau put one man in the hospital, and another in jail.

Police report there was a dispute between two men who are related to each other. Things escalated and one man stabbed the other Tuesday night.

A 39 year old was taken to Aspirus Hospital where he's in stable condition. A 29 year old relative is in the Marathon County Jail.

Raptor Education Group hosts Halloween eventSubmitted: 10/29/2014

ANTIGO - The Raptor Education Group will give a special presentation on owls on Halloween (Friday).

The meeting will be geared for children and adults. Live owls will be at the event and three of them will be released in the wild at the end of the meeting.

"We get all the species you can find in Wisconsin, they come in for rehab," said Director of Education Abbey Krumrie. "We get a lot of baby owls in during the spring and we have foster parents that help take care of them.
So that's what we have to release on Halloween."
