Impacts of chronic wasting move closer to the northwoodsSubmitted: 02/07/2014
Story By Newswatch 12 Newsteam

MADISON - The impacts of chronic wasting disease creep closer to the northwoods.

Baiting and feeding of deer is now banned in Shawano and Waupaca counties.

The ban went into effect Thursday.

The ban was put in place because of positive results for chronic wasting at a
deer farm in Marathon County in November.

Shawano and Waupaca counties are within a 10-mile radius of the farm.

State law requires a baiting and feeding ban in counties within a 10 mile
radius of a positive CWD test.

Officials waited to prohibit baiting and feeding in the two counties to avoid
interfering with deer hunting.

Because of CWD, baiting and feeding of deer is forbidden in almost half of
Wisconsin's counties.
