- The Super Bowl was not the only big game played this weekend. Several high
school athletes put in big-time performances.

Here is a look at our nominees for the Newswatch 12 Player of the Week.

NOMINEE 1

Phillips boys basketball team earned a road victory against Northland Pines
Friday Night. Danny Baratka led the Loggers with 19 points.

NOMINEE 2


In girls basketball, Rhinelander's Kylie Hunter scored 21 points against Antigo.
The Hodags knocked off Antigo to move into second place in the Great Northern
Conference standings.

NOMINEE 3

In Gymnastics, Katelyn Kondzela of Antigo helped the Red Robins capture the team
title in their own invite. Kondzela finished second in the all-around.

NOMINEE 4

In boys hockey, Merrill's Austin Burgener had a big night at Tomahawk. He
scored two goals. He also added three assists for five points in the Bluejays
victory.

To vote on any of the nominees, go to the sports poll at wjfw.com. Voting ends
at 3pm on Friday. The winner will receive a plaque.

Elcho wrestler Alec Smith was last week's winner.

RHINELANDER - Some students find themselves sitting in a classroom, wondering how they would use what they're learning in real life. A group of community members in Rhinelander hope to make the connection between what students are learning in the classroom and adult life. On Tuesday, they gave students a crash course in being an adult.

Rhinelander High School seniors traded in their books for a game of life on Tuesday.

"Life can give you a lot of stuff very quickly. I managed to hit both a deer, rear-end a car, and hit snow bank in the same two-week period," said Rhinelander High School senior Dustin Simon, discussing a financial simulation in which he participated.

TOMAHAWK - Many Northwoods school districts face a tricky dilemma.

They want to give students digital resources like laptops to use at school and take home.

But internet access in rural northern Wisconsin can be spotty or unavailable.

The School District of Tomahawk found 86 percent of its students have internet access at home.
