Rifle sales may soon be allowed from distant statesSubmitted: 01/10/2014
Story By Associated Press

MADISON - Soon you might be able to order a rifle from across the country.

A legislative committee should vote next week on a Republican bill that would let Wisconsin residents purchase rifles and shotguns from dealers anywhere in the nation.

The U.S. Gun Control Act from 1968 banned interstate firearm sales, but allowed dealers to sell long guns to buyers in neighboring states.

A federal law enacted nearly two decades later granted states the ability to permit people to buy long guns from dealers in any state.

The Assembly's natural resources committee is set to vote on a bill on Wednesday, which would allow the sales.

Approval would clear the way for a vote in the full Assembly.
