Power scam calls now targeting businesses Submitted: 12/17/2013
Story By Associated Press

MADISON - A call claiming the power will soon be shut off would worry anyone.

Scammers count on that, and state officials are warning Wisconsin businesses.

There are rising reports of scammers calling with threats to cancel utility service.

The scammers demand immediate payment.

The Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection says the con artists call a business and pretend to represent a local utility company.

They tell the business they will shutdown services because of unpaid bills.

They may also claim the power meter needs upgrades or repairs.

The scammers demand payment within hours by wire transfer or with a prepaid debit card.

The state says utility companies will never call and threaten immediate cancellation.
