PHELPS - People in Conover and Phelps move one step closer to having a multi-use trail connect their towns.

The Town of Phelps got funding to improve a 5-mile stretch of trail between Conover and Phelps.

That's even after the town's $216,000 grant application was denied.

Instead, the town will get $90,000.

Half will come from the DNR.

The other half will come from the Vilas County Trails and Recreation Committee and the Great Headwaters Trails nonprofit group.

"It'll put in some equalizer pipes which are effectively culverts. And also lay down some gravel and some basework before the final top layer goes on," says Town of Phelps Chairman Colin Snook.

Organizers expect the work will be complete in 2014.

But there will still be more work to do.

That's why the town is improving its application for a $180,000 dollar grant from the DNR right now.

This stretch of trail is on an old railroad grade that's owned by Vilas County.

It's currently open to hikers and cross-over bikers.

It will be open to snowmobiliers this winter.

"Any way that we can bring people to town to have a good time and play and spend money is a good thing for everybody," adds Snook.

Great Headwaters Trails designed the plan.

Its goal is to connect 40 miles of walking and biking trails throughout Vilas County.

"I used to love to hunt and fish," he said.

But when Simon, who is from Rhinelander, lost his legs during a work accident in 2008, he didn't know if he'd be able to enjoy the outdoors again.
