Northwoods Spotlight - Chequamegon cross country Nov 6Submitted: 11/06/2013
Story By Joe Dufek

WISCONSIN RAPIDS - When Park Falls high school combined with Glidden back in 2009 - Chequamegon high school was born.

A new school - which meant a chance to establish some new memories and achievements.

Last weekend, the Chequamegon cross country teams did just that.

The state cross country championships is filled with ups and downs. For the Chequamegon boys team, first 'up' was realizing they performed well and serious contenders for a state title.

But then, the 'down' - the Screaming Eagles just missed a state title by two points.

The final up - realizing the team earned Chequamegon's first state trophy in any sport.

"This whole expereince has been amazing," senior Jordan Koski explains. "Just so many awards. I'm just so thankful everyone is recognizing me and my team."

Head coach Mary Patterson adds, "It's the state meet. It's hard - it's tough. Anything can happen down here. Everyone of our boys gutted it out."

The Koski brothers have consistently finished as the top two Chequamegon runners at every meet. Older brother Jordan would finish ahead of Kevin most of the year. But Kevin did beat his brother at state. Their parents are proud of how both handle adversity.

The girls team also made history. They qualified for state the first time. Chequamegon finished ninth.

Park Falls captured the Division 2 state championship back in 1991. Head Coach Mary Peterson just completed her 25th year of coaching.
