Kids trick or treated in downtown Rhinelander Submitted: 10/26/2013
Story By Shardaa Gray

RHINELANDER - Most kids do their trick or treating on their neighborhood streets.

But today kids got their candy from businesses in downtown Rhinelander.

Kids, parents and dogs dressed up for the fun.

The Downtown Rhinelander Incorporated started this so they could promote downtown shops.

They also want to give back to the community.

"You live in a small town and you love your downtown, but retail wise it's hard to keep it vibrant, alive and compete with the big box stores," volunteer, Tina Werres said.

"So there's room for all of us, but we have to create activities and events downtown."

Some of the parents and grandparents like this better than going from house to house.

"You have the businesses doing it verses going to the homes and not knowing the people and what they're like," said grandparent, Diana Sturzl.

"With businesses you're more out to believe they're outstanding citizens."

Businesses were happy with the turnout considering the weather.

Halloween trick or treating hours start Thursday at 4 p.m.
