- This week, the post season begins in football, volleyball, and cross country.

Sectionals are also this week in boys soccer.

Athletes are beginning to perform at a higher level. Let's take a look at our nominees for the Newswatch 12 Player of the Week.

NOMINEE 1

In football, Merrill running back Alex Klug rushed for 102 yards and 2 touchdowns against Lakeland. Merrill defeated Lakeland to finish the regular season with a (6-3) record.


NOMINEE 2

In girls tennis, Newman Catholic senior Grace Larrain captured the Division 2 singles championship. She finished (28-3) and earned the school's first state championship in girls tennis.

NOMINEE 3

In girls cross country, Lakeland's Lauren Schilling won the race at the Great Northern Conference meet. The T-Birds won the team competition at the meet.

NOMINEE 4

Back to football, Crandon's Morgan Krueger rushed for 235 yards and 3 touchdowns in the Cardinal's victory over Menominee Indian.

A few days ago, a driver hit the power pole, but the collision wasn't hard enough to actually knock the pole down.

MADISON - An expansion of who can play sports and participate in extracurricular activities in public schools in Wisconsin is being scaled back.

RHINELANDER - The number of fireworks-related injuries increases in the 30 days surrounding the Fourth of July.

A study by the Consumer Product Safety Commission says more than 200 people nationwide go to emergency rooms every day with these injuries around this time of year.

To prevent injuries, it's important to follow guidelines set up by the state of Wisconsin.
