THE NORTHWOODS - We're getting to the point in the fall sports season where conference standings are starting to shape up.

Last week there were some amazing performances from local athletes to help their teams to the top. It's time to check out our nominees for Newswatch 12 Player of the Week.

NOMINEE 1

Northern Elite quarterback Joey Swanson helped lead his team to an important win over Crandon on Saturday. Swanson ran the ball 31 times for 191 yards and a touchdown in the conference victory and the Predators remain undefeated.

NOMINEE 2

In the GNC, the Northland Pines soccer team topped Rhinelander on Thursday 1-0 and Levi Pruni scored the game winning goal. Pruni also scored a goal Saturday in a win over Iron Mountain.

NOMINEE 3

The GNC had their first conference volleyball meet on Saturday. Tomahawk went 3-0 and took first place. Becca Doughty played a big role with 89 assists, 10 digs and 9 aces in the Hatchets victory.

NOMINEE 4

And in girls swimming, Rhinelander had a convincing win over Merrill on Monday by a score of 109-60. Marie Sandstrom took first place in the 100 butterfly and 100 breaststroke helping lead the Hodags.

You can vote on any of the nominees on the sports poll at wjfw.com. Voting ends at 3pm on Friday. The winner will receive a plaque from R and D Trophies of Tomahawk.

Austin Salzgeber from the Medford football team was last week's winner.

University of Wisconsin fruit crop entomologist Christelle Guédot tells Wisconsin Public Radio (http://bit.ly/2sLfQEH) that researchers started trying to pinpoint when and where the spotted wing drosophila is most active within plants last summer.

CHIPPEWA FALLS - CHIPPEWA FALLS, Wis. (AP) " A former Chippewa Falls science teacher has been sentenced to six years in prison for the sexual assault of a student.

Joel Jahnke had pleaded no contest to three felony counts, including second degree sexual assault of a child. The victim was 13 years old when she was assaulted.

MADISON - MADISON, Wis. (AP) " Madison police say a 52-year-old man is dead after a stabbing in an apartment.

Officers were called to a four-unit building on West Badger Road about 5:30 a.m. Saturday. The victim was dead at the scene. Police say he was stabbed multiple times.

TOMAHAWK - Tomahawk Berry Farm opened its gates Friday for the first time this summer.

The morning was what Tom Behling calls the perfect strawberry picking weather.

Behling has owned the Tomahawk Berry Farm for more than 30 years.

CRANDON - Update 10:55 a.m. Friday

The death of a woman in Crandon earlier this week appears to have been a suicide.

25 year old Savanna Larson of Lac du Flambeau died early Wednesday.
