Two dead after standoffSubmitted: 08/29/2013
WINNEBAGO COUNTY - Two people apparently killed themselves during a standoff on a busy highway in Winnebago County.

Sheriff's officials say the man and woman died of gunshot wounds inside the car.

The shots were not fired by authorities.

The man and woman were suspects in robbery at a liquor store and bar in Vinland.

Deputies tried to stop their car on Highway 41 about 4 p.m. Wednesday.

That's when the standoff began.

Traffic backed up for miles.

About 6 p.m. officers say they heard two gunshots coming from the vehicle.

Deputies approached and found the two suspects dead.

The investigation is being led by Oshkosh police.

The Rhinelander City Council held a meeting last night to go through a list of candidates. At the end of that meeting, they went front from having 22, down to a list of four.

"We have four candidates that we have coming in," said Rhinelander's Mayor Richard Johns. "And the candidates vary, one's from Eau Claire, Antigo, Kewaskum, and Stevens Point. We pretty much have a local area so-to-speak, rather than out of state."
