Most of Northwoods will have anterless deer to huntSubmitted: 08/28/2013
Story By Joe Dufek

RHINELANDER - The DNR released their forecast for the hunting and trapping seasons coming up in the fall.

Most of the Northwoods will have a regular unit where Bucks plus bonus antlerless permits will be available.

However unit 34 in Vilas county, unit 29B in Oneida County, and unit 39 in parts of Florence and Forest counties will be for bucks only. Meaning no anterless deer permits. Youth, disabled, and military on leave will have permits available to them. This will allow them a greater chance for success.

DNR wildlife biologist Jeremy Holtz says more units will have more tags available. However the harsh end to winter earlier this year, did make a negative impact.

"We're still keeping our antlerless harvest low in the majority of the north," Holtz explained. "In fact the hunters in Oneida county in units 36,37, and 38 we have a reduced number of permits than last year. We're more conservative than the year before."

More than 243-thousand deer were shot during the state's nine-day gun season last year.
