Lakeland cross country sweeps Voigt Invite titlesSubmitted: 08/27/2013
Story By Joe Dufek

WOODRUFF - In high school cross country, Lakeland hosted the first meet of the season. The T-Birds will be competing in three events in ten days.

Tuesday was the annual Ted Voigt invite. It was at Clear Lake Park just outside of Woodruff. Five teams were taking part - 160 athletes between boys and girls competing.

In the girls race, Lakeland took four of the top five spots. T-Bird senior Katie Klappa was the winner. Lakeland won the girls team title. Wisconsin Rapids was second. Merrill third. Rhinelander fourth.

After the races, the athletes cooled off jumping into Clear Lake. Katie is thrilled to start the year with a win.

"I just stayed hydrated before the race," Katie explains. "I stayed up front and was ready to run faster at the end."

On the boys side, Devin Greiner of Wisconsin Rapids won the race. Lakeland also won the boys team title. Merrill was second. Rhinelander third. Medford finished fourth.

The Ted Voigt Invite is named after the longtime Lakeland cross country and boys basketball coach for his service to the school over the years.
