Antigo football kicks off season ThursdaySubmitted: 08/21/2013
Story By Joe Dufek

ANTIGO - Most high school football teams will begin the season Friday night. A few actually kickoff the year Thursday.

Matt Weberpal and the Antigo Red Robins are in West DePere. It's a rematch of last season's D-3 playoff. West DePere shutout Antigo.

Antigo has fewer kids playing this year. In fact, they will not have a Junior Varsity team. Only 13 vets are among the 39 kids playing football at Antigo. No one is exactly sure why not as many are out for football.

But the Red Robins are concentrating on the players they do have.

"It's quality over quantity," Antigo head coach Matt Weberpal explains. "We can't afford any injuries. I'll take our starters against anybody, but you've got to have depth at the same time."

"We're tough," senior fullback and linebacker Jacob Zabrowski adds. "Got a lot of guys playing both ways, so we're well-conditioned. We got to have great technique and guys mentally tough."
