Wausau West hosts 6-team football scrimmageSubmitted: 08/16/2013
Story By Joe Dufek

WAUSAU - Area high school football teams are eagerly getting ready for next week's season opener.

Players have been practicing hitting, and tackling with their teammates.

On Friday, several area schools held scrimmages.

Wausau West hosted a 6-team scrimmage. Rhinelander, Merrill, Antigo, Lakeland, and Wausau East all took part.

It gives the kids a chance to face an opponent. It also gives the coaches some insight on their team.

"You want to learn from these," says Wausau West head coach Kevin Grundy. "You want to learn from the positives. You also want to take the mistakes and turn them into positives."

"We learned what hitting is actually like," Lakeland senior Tom Bruckner adds. "We got physical. We made mistakes, but we're actually getting better."

Northland Pines also hosted a scrimmage with Crandon and Phillips.

Most teams open next Friday. Wausau West begins at Marshfield. They look to improve from last year's two-win season.
