Hearings being put together on Elk ExpansionSubmitted: 08/13/2013
Story By Associated Press

MADISON - Hearings should be set up soon on establishing another elk herd in Wisconsin.

The state's only elk herd currently roams the Clam Lake area.

The Department of Natural Resources wants to create a second herd near Black River Falls.

The DNR wants to use elk from Kentucky to create the new herd.

They would also expand the Clam Lake herd.

They hope to import the first 50 animals in 2015.

The DNR drafted regulations that would establish a management zone for the new herd.

The population goal would be 390 animals.

The regulations would set the opening day for an elk season on October 15th, once the herd is big enough.

The state natural resources board is expected to authorize public hearings at a meeting tomorrow in Baraboo.
