RHINELANDER - The Rhinelander District Library helps kids dig into reading, quite literally.

It hosted the annual Worm Race Tuesday.

62 teams of two did everything they could to get their worms to the finish line first.

The race wasn't the only fun part of the day.

"It was fun to name him," says race winner Caleb Zastrow.

Zastrow named his worm Bob.

This was his four-year-old sister Lexie's first time racing a worm.

"It was fun playing with my brother, and when it was starting, I loved the part with the race," Lexie Zastrow added.

The event is so popular that there's a waiting list for teams to race.

That makes library staffers proud.

"Having the books and computers are nice but if you do special programming they tend to stick around and take out some books, and we really try to promote reading during the summer when sometimes it lacks," says Rhinelander District Library Associate Director Tom Hurlburt.

Kids went home with gift certificates for pizza, some gummy worms, and other prizes.

The winning kids even got trophies.

Let's hope the winning worms avoid the bait box.

Two years ago, the community helped build a brand new gym and fitness center at the school.

The wood for the basketball floor was even donated by local loggers.

Each grade level at the school has only about 15 students.

Despite its size, for many, it's still the center of the community.

RHINELANDER - The Rhinelander Food Pantry could use more volunteers to help move to their new location.

The pantry will move into the old Golden Harvest building.

But before they move they need to make some changes to the building.

One of those changes is building a new wall.

"It will separate the distribution area from the storage area," says Rhinelander Food Pantry volunteer Bill Vancos. "The distribution area will end up being about twice the size of what our current area is right now at the current location, so that'll be great. And then we'll also have the storage all on one level."
