Northwoods library hosts worm race
RHINELANDER - The Rhinelander District Library helps kids dig into reading, quite literally.

It hosted the annual Worm Race Tuesday.

62 teams of two did everything they could to get their worms to the finish line first.

The race wasn't the only fun part of the day.

"It was fun to name him," says race winner Caleb Zastrow.

Zastrow named his worm Bob.

This was his four-year-old sister Lexie's first time racing a worm.

"It was fun playing with my brother, and when it was starting, I loved the part with the race," Lexie Zastrow added.

The event is so popular that there's a waiting list for teams to race.

That makes library staffers proud.

"Having the books and computers are nice but if you do special programming they tend to stick around and take out some books, and we really try to promote reading during the summer when sometimes it lacks," says Rhinelander District Library Associate Director Tom Hurlburt.

Kids went home with gift certificates for pizza, some gummy worms, and other prizes.

The winning kids even got trophies.

Let's hope the winning worms avoid the bait box.

RHINELANDER - If you're still waiting on those holiday gifts to come in the mail, you're not alone!

Cyber Monday orders hit an all-time high record, and now, UPS is struggling to keep up.

Last week the company said to expect a two day delay on standard shipping time.

So what does this mean for you?

"You can get a little bit of a backlog. A lot of people have to do a lot of sorting with all those packages," says Postal Express manager Wendy Thompson.

But that delay mainly applies to stores shipping to you.

That's not so much the case for you shipping to a friend or family member.

"From our area there hasn't been a noticeable delay," says Wendy.

If you're a bit behind schedule sending you gifts, you still have time, but you need to move fast on UPS or FedEx ground shipping Friday.

December 19th is the last day for USPS first class mail and FedEx Express.

If you choose to go with UPS, Dec 18th is the deadline for 3 day shipping.

The best way to keep an eye on your holiday shipment is to hang on to your receipt and make sure you save the tracking number.

RHINELANDER - This week's snowfall started a lot of winter activities here in the Northwoods.

One Rhinelander resort was finally able to prepare its ski and snowshoe trails.

"It's really pretty simple, try not to hit any trees," said Holiday Acres Resort trail groomer Pete Zambon.

Zambon has aspired to be a trail groomer since he was a kid riding on the back of his dad's snowmobile.

"[I would] ride on the back of the snowmobile with him back in the day and it was kind of something I aspired to be… the guy driving the snowmobile," said Zambon.

Pete's dad, Kim Zambon owns Holiday Acres and has spent a lot of his own time grooming the trails too.

"Often I think back to those times when we kind of hacked through the woods. It was fun," said Kim.

But after taking the reins from his dad, Pete quickly learned this job was made for him.

"My motto is attitude of gratitude," said Pete.

However, there are some dangers that come with it.

RHINELANDER - Thursday Rhinelander turned into the city of lights. The Light of the Northwoods kicked off its drive-through light show at Hodag Park today.
"We never got to do anything like this when I was a kid," said volunteer Corey Passmore.
However, Passmore's son will get the chance to experience a Christmas in a way his father was never able to.
"As far as I can think back we've never had anything like this in Rhinelander," said Passmore.
Months of preparation, hundreds of hours setting up, and more than a dozen creative minds helped create magic in Rhinelander.
"Symbolizes an opportunity for community to come together," said YMCA of the Northwoods CEO Ryan Zietlow.
