MADISON - The state health department confirms the first human case of West Nile Virus this year.

It's already confirmed West Nile in birds in Oneida and Vilas Counties.

The human case was found in Dane County.

Last year, 57 cases of West Nile virus were reported among people in Wisconsin.

That's the highest number of reported cases since surveillance began in the state.

Most people never show symptoms.

People who do become sick may have a fever, headache, rash, muscle and joint aches.

Symptoms may begin three to 15 days after a bite from an infected mosquito.

People with compromised immune systems.. and the elderly.. are at risk for complications to become serious.
