Run to Remember will honor fallen officer
RHINELANDER - People run for many reasons -- for fun, for competition, or to stay in shape.

But in September, you can run to remember.

Vilas County Deputy Sheriff Kory Dahlvig died three years ago while he was on duty.

Now, his family members want to turn that sad memory into an opportunity.

"I wanted to turn a tragic event into a positive community event, make something that would keep people talking in the community," said Melissa Lane, Dahlvig's cousin. "Just taking that day and saying 'We're going to remember Kory today.' Our family thinks about him every day."

Lane is organizing the "Run to Remember" 5k on the Nicolet College campus.

Dahlvig's badge number was 235, so Lane set a goal of 235 runners.

That's a big goal for a first-year run.

"We have a really good team of people behind the run to get it organized right now," she said. "We're looking for some volunteers on race day to do things like be on the road crew. The biggest help we need from the community is to have them come out and support the event."

The Run to Remember and Family Fun Day is Saturday, September 21.
