Verizon Wireless looking for new tower location Submitted: 07/22/2013

RHINELANDER - People who live in this part of Wisconsin know it can be hard to get a good cell phone signal.

Dropped calls happen a lot.

And if one cellphone company doesn't find a new spot for its tower, Rhinelander callers could have even more dropped calls.

Verizon is looking for a new location for its tower.

The tower in Rhinelander is not able to support additional equipment needed to meet the network needs.

One potential spot was the parking lot at the Rhinelander District Library.

But last week, the Rhinelander District Library's board of trustees shut that down.

The next step is for Verizon to propose a co-locating on the city's tall downtown flagpole.

"Everybody wants no dropped calls. Anything like this, you want service, but nobody wants a pole in their yard," said City of Rhinelander Alderman, Mark Pelletier.

"Here we have an opportunity to put a building, rather than a pole and use the existing one."

Debbie Winchell owns a salon near the library.

She didn't want Verizon to put the tower there, and hopes the new location will be in a non-residential area.

"There are too many homes you know it's such a busy area," All About Style Owner, Debbie Winchell said.

"Like I said the parking lots would be fine. It's open, it's not bothering anyone, but it's pretty out here, you just don't want to ruin that."

Verizon Wireless says they cannot comment further on this site because it is still in the planning stage.

The next Council Meeting will be next month.
