WAUSAU - A cemetery can be a place to mourn, remember and show respect for loved ones who are gone.

It's not a place you'd imagine anyone would have the nerve to vandalize.

But that's what happened last week at Pine Grove Cemetery in Wausau. 56 tombstones were damaged or knocked over.

Dennis Nabozny's grandfather and great grandfather's stones were some of them.

"It's pretty lame," Nabozny said. "You need to find something better to do."

But not all is lost. Pine Grove Director Patty Grimm said this happened a decade ago. Since then, the cemetery has added trail cams for security. The next step is to repair the tombstones.

"We will fix everything that has been damaged regardless of contributions that is just what we are going to do," Grimm said.

Local businesses like Fred Mueller Automotive have joined forces to offer $4,000 for information on the vandalism.

Other families and organizations plan on donating $3,000 to the cemetery.

Joe Miller thinks it's the right thing to do.

"It just made us sick when we heard about it, so we wanted to step up right away and we're really happy a lot of people in the community think the same thing."

Police are still investigating.

The tombstones should be repaired by Monday. Once they're up, Pine Grove can finally return to that quiet place of honor that it's been for more than a century.
