Rhinelander skater ready to carry the torchSubmitted: 07/17/2013
Story By Joe Dufek

RHINELANDER - 14-year old Lauryn Cook of Rhinelander will compete against some of the best figure skaters in the country. She'll also get to do something few get the chance to do.

Lauryn will carry the torch in the games opening ceremony. The event is the State Games of America. It's in Hershey, PA. Over 10,000 athletes in 26 events will compete at the games.

She qualified by winning the dance competition and finishing 3rd in the skate program at the Badger State Games. That was back in February in Mosinee.

The State Games of America is an amateur Olympic style event.

After submitting her information, including a short essay, she was among the selected athletes to carry the torch.

Besides medaling at Badger State, she mentioned playing soccer and volleyball in the essay.

Lauryn is excited, and a little nervous about the honor.

"I just don't want to drop (the torch)," Cook admits. "It's going to be really fun. I'm going to have a great time."

Lauryn has practiced between 6-10 hours a week for over 11 years.

The State Games of America runs July 31-August 4th.
