WAUSAU - You typically use sidewalks to get somewhere.

But this weekend in Wausau, the sidewalks serve as a canvas for expression.

The Center for Visual Arts is holding its 10th Chalkfest.

Area artisits gathered at the 400 Block in Wausau to start their sidewalk chalk creations.

Erin Blicharz was a winner at last year's event. She likes working around other artists.

"Its just amazing seeing everybody's designs and what other people can come up with," Blicharz said. "People get to see how things and drawings are created. We know its temporary, but its fun."

Over 500 kids and adults created pieces today.

Most of the art referenced pop culture.

Organizers like Mort McBain hope the event encourages kids creativity.

"They can get a little chalk board and they can go to town with the chalk board all day if they want and feel like a real artist," McBain said. "Its working out great this weekend, we have met our goals and things are looking good."

Chalkfest continues Sunday.

Winners will be announced at 4 p.m.

You'll have to hurry to see all of the artwork before the next rainfall washes the chalk away.
