WAUSAU - Crime happens everywhere.

But the Marathon County Sheriff's Department wants you to know what kinds of crimes happen and where they happen.

The department's Crime Report Map is online and available as an app.

It shows where assaults, burglaries and sexual offenses happen in Marathon County.

One of the best features of the app is signing up for notifications.

"If I want to be notified weekly or daily or monthly about what's happened in my neighborhood, I can sign up to receive an email that shows what kind of crimes have happened in my neighborhood since then." said Marathon Sheriff's Detective, Ryan Webber.

Detective Webber says it's too early to tell how many people are using the app.

But it can be useful for trying to solve a crime.

"For example if somebody sees a suspicious vehicle or a suspicious person in the area and later sees on the map that a crime occurred in that area, they can click on the map on that particular crime and submit a tip to us," Webber said.

"That let us know what they saw. That might help us solve that crime."

The app is free to download on both iPhones and Androids.
