Zimmermann goes six innings, Nats rout Brewers 10-5Submitted: 07/01/2013
Story By Associated Press; MLB.com

WASHINGTON - Bryce Harper homered on his first swing since coming off the disabled list and his Washington Nationals teammates quickly joined in, beating the slumping Milwaukee Brewers 10-5 on Monday night.

Auburndale native Jordan Zimmermann picked up his National League-leading 12th win, and Washington won for the eighth time in 12 games. Zimmermann, notched the first three-hit game of his career while pitching six solid innings.

From the mound, Zimmermann sailed easily through four innings but gave up two runs on three singles in the fifth. He got two outs in the sixth before Rickie Weeks and Juan Francisco crushed long back-to-back home runs.

Zimmermann (12-3) saw his ERA rise, to 2.46, after giving up four runs on nine hits in six innings. He struck out five and walked none.

Now 42-40, the Nationals need a win on Tuesday to reach three games over .500 for the first time since May 18.

Yovani Gallardo was out after three-plus innings and an already burned-out bullpen was burned some more.

The Brewers marked the mathematical midpoint of their season with their sixth consecutive loss. At 32-49, they are 17 games under .500 for the first time since the final week of 2004 and within two games of the Marlins for the poorest record in the National League.
