School board to consider $63,000 paving projectSubmitted: 06/14/2013
Story By Lex Gray

RHINELANDER - The Rhinelander School Board needed to find a way to save millions before a referendum this winter.

Now, the board is considering whether paving Crescent Elementary's parking lot is worth $63,000.

Principal Teri Maney says it's worth it.

"With gravel in the winter, it became very icy," she said. "We had a lot of potholes and people slipping and sliding, which was a concern for us."

Laying down blacktop would be the final step in Crescent's parking lot project.

Maney says it would help with safety and traffic flow. Gym teachers would also use the area.

"We need to get our blacktop down so we can get our backstop up for baseball, get our basketball court back up, get our tennis area mapped out," she said. "Our Phy Ed teachers use it late into the fall and early in spring, as soon as it's cleared off, for their extra classroom."

The board meets at 6:00 p.m. Monday.

It happened in July on Shawano Lake in Shawano County, and on Minocqua Lake a few years ago.
