SPASH baseball falls in D1 title gameSubmitted: 06/13/2013
Story By Joe Dufek

APPLETON - It was a wild finish in Thursday night's state baseball tournament. In the Division One championship, SPASH faced Sun Prairie.

SPASH trailed 4-2 in the bottom of the seventh inning with 2 outs. However they had two runners on base when Point batter Mitch Mallek was hit by a pitch.

Initially, the umpire ruled the batter didn't get out of the way. After talking to his crew, the umpire reversed the call and awarded first base.

That loaded the bases for Sterling King. He hit a 2-run single to tie the game and send it to extra innings.

But in the eighth inning, Sun Prairie's Connor Funnell hit an RBI-double. It proved to be the winning run.

SPASH fell 5-4 in 8 innings.

EAGLE RIVER - Some local students could win state and national awards by taking a math exam.

Students at Northland Pines High School will take the Trig-Star Exam in March.

The exam tests students on trigonometry they've learned in high school.

Students need to be able to apply that knowledge to real life situations as if they're a land surveyor.

"Land surveying in itself is a basis for a lot of things in our country," says Vilas County Land Information/Mapping Department GIS Technician Tony Jones. "It's a chance to work outside, it's a chance to work with your hands, it's also a professional level position. You get to work with mathematics, and architecture, and history, and law."
