Protestors greet Gogebic Taconite workers as test drilling beginsSubmitted: 06/13/2013
Story By Associated Press

MADISON - Not everyone wants mining up in northern Wisconsin, and some are more vocal than others.

Gogebic Taconite employees ran into about 15 protesters as they began exploratory drilling Tuesday morning.

The company wants to mine in Ashland and Iron counties.

The Iron County Sheriff sent out a press release Wednesday saying the protesters had scattered into nearby woods by the time officers arrived.

He says investigators are looking into allegations one of the protesters stole a geologist's cell phone and camera.

There were reports of vandalism and barricades blocking the site.

However, the Iron County Sheriff's department made no mention of those reports.
