Newman Catholic to play for D4 softball title

MADISON - Newman Catholic is making its first trip to the state softball tournament.

Friday morning, they faced New Lisbon in the D-4 Semifinals.

In the fifth inning, Newman's Christina Grunow had an RBI single. It was part of a three run inning for the Fighting Cardinals.

They won 4-1. Newman Catholic will face Algoma for the state title Saturday morning. First pitch is at 10am.


In Division 3, Pacelli fell to Mineral Point 2-1.

In Division 1 Friday night, SPASH also lost a heart breaker... falling 1-0 to Kenosha Bradford.

One other state tournament score, in boys team tennis, Wausau East was shutout in the D-1 quarterfinals to Brookfield East 7-0.

The Marathon County Sheriff's Office reports a 37-year-old Shawano man died after apparently overdosing on methamphetamine.  

Witnesses say 37-year-old Lucas Groshek and his wife, Carolyn, were shaking and convulsing in a car in the eastern Marathon County town of Norrie.  Mr. Groshek died before getting to the hospital.   Mrs. Groshek, 33, is in stable condition as of Tuesday afternoon.

MADISON - Police say a contractor who suffered a fatal heart attack while working overnight at a Wisconsin Culver's was "scared to death" when two armed men tried to rob the restaurant.

Madison Police Chief Mike Koval told reporters Tuesday that the robbers would not allow other workers to help the 56-year-old man, who was suffering a medical emergency.
