RHINELANDER - A trip to the grocery store made a Rhinelander woman much wealthier today.

The Rhinelander Trig's sold a Badger 5 ticket worth $293,000 yesterday.

The winner came in to verify the ticket this morning.

Customer service clerk Patti Pazera gets $50,000 winners occasionally, but this was a first.

"Her husband told her they had the winning numbers, and she didn't quite believe it, so she brought it in," Pazera said. "We're moving from one customer service center to the other right now, so we were down on our lottery, but we did have the tickets ran and she was able to verify that she was a winner."

Pazera pushes Badger 5 tickets over others because they're only sold in Wisconsin.

She said that gives lottery players better odds, but she's never seen the jackpot go this high for Badger 5.

"It's always exciting whenever we sell big tickets," Pazera said. "We always have people come in and say, 'It's always Milwaukee, it's always Madison, they never win in the Northwoods.' So now we can finally say 'Yes, they do!'"

We don't know who the winner is yet, but she and her husband have about six months to get to Madison and claim the prize.

The area lags behind the rest of the state economically. That was one of the reasons mining was a topic of focus. The Gogebic Taconite project would involve a four mile open pit mine in Iron and Ashland County. The project could mean more than 600 jobs with other secondary jobs connected to the mine.
